When we took over a property in Middlebury a couple of years ago, we inherited 3 espalier apple trees. Unfortunately, the trees were quite overgrown when we arrived. One of the the items on the homeowners list was to get the apples trees back under control.
Typically, apples are pruned in the off season but this job couldn’t wait so we set out to take control of the apples in the early summer. It was quite a job getting them back into shape but with some prudent pruning, we were able to not only bring them back to form but also have them back onto the horizontal plane of the brick wall.
